Your plumbing is broken somewhere, and letting in ventilation air, or outside air. Check with your plumber.

Maybe it's just that alien from "Dreamcatcher" coming up your toilet bowl. Maybe gettin' closer ;-). Just kiddin'.

If it happens when something somewhere else is draining you have a semi blocked main and when it fills the air is displaced. and has to go somewhere. it follows the path of least resistance and pushes the water back up the toilet. just far enough to burp the air. Each time this happens the clog gets worse though so get it fixed!

This is coming in from negative air pressure from the vent on the roof. Put a cover on the vent.

You have a blocked vent tube.
Could be a birds nest, or a line plugged on an upper floor. Unless the plumbing is pre-code. If so, you should have a vent tube installed.

It was a spectic tank pipe problem when it happened to me. Call a plumber, repair job will be a few hundred bucks.
