Vinyl is the least expensive of the three common types of siding....

There are positives and negatives to all of them. Vinyl and aluminum dent easily, where steel doesn't. Vinyl makes noise when it expands and contracts from heat and sun. Unfortunately, steel is the most expensive but most realistic looking. It also comes in different board sizes. It generally comes with a 30 year warranty and doesn't get powdery like aluminum does. On the second floor we had them install fiberglass shake that has held up beautifully over the years.

I'd look at all three and then decide. As you can tell from my comments, I prefer steel. We can put a ladder up to it without worrying and it looks beautiful after over 20 years. Contrary to what many people think, it doesn't rust.

Vinyl is final and will last for a good long time. One of the things I see is dry rot in the area behind the vinyl. It is designed to breath but for some reason the moisture barrier makes for real problems. I think the investment is only as good as the application of the product. The idea is to find a company that you find to reputable and will stand behind the work. Good investments last and what is under vinyl is the most important thing. Check the product and the installers out.
