what are those things called that can be used to cool a small space such as a shed or garage. they are non-electric fans that spin due to the heat rising. basically a metal tube that comes out of the roof with the spinning assembly on top

THEY ARE CALLED TURBINE VENTS OR WHIRLYBIRD VENTS WHICH VENT OUT APPROX 60 SQ IN OF AIR.
I RECOMMEND IF YOU HAVE ENOUGH HORIZONAL RIDGE, 2' OR MORE, USE HIGHPOINT SERIES 5 BY ELK CORP (WWW.ELKCORP.COM) THIS IS A SHINGLE OVER RIDGE VENT WHICH DISPLACES MORE AIR OUT EQUAL OR GREATER THAN THE AMOUNT OF SOFFIT VENTS.
CUT BACK THE DECKING 1 1/2-2" FROM THE CENTER LINE OF THE RIDGE RAFTER ON EACH SIDE.THESE VENTS ARE SOLD IN 4' PIECES AND BUTT UP END TO END.
IF IT IS A HIP ROOF USE MORE THAN ONE TURBINE VENT.
