Is firefox a better browser? Is it supposed to have enhanced safety features? How?
Or is there another browser that you'd prefer - opera, netscape etc?

The United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team recommends people stop using IE

"There are a number of significant vulnerabilities in technologies related to the IE domain/zone...It is possible to reduce exposure to these vulnerabilities by using a different web browser"
http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/713878

Internet Explorer relies on ActiveX for some features to work, despite the new IE7 not having ActiveX turned on by default, its still there and could be a security risk. Without ActiveX some features may not work properly in IE

Here is what Microsoft had to say about this feature:
"An ActiveX control can be an extremely insecure way to provide a feature...From the moment a user downloads an ActiveX control, the control may be vulnerable to attack..."
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/workshop/components/activex/security.asp
(Firefox and Opera don't have ActiveX at all)

Using IE means there is more of a chance of screwing up your PC and have your ID stolen.
Here is IE, FF and Opera side by side
http://www.webdevout.net/security_summary.php#vulnerabilities

IE supports webstandards very poorly, try this test with IE, Firefox and Opera
http://www.webstandards.org/files/acid2/test.html
IE will fail HORRIBLY while FF and Opera will do much better

I use Firefox and Opera. Love em both
However most people seem to prefer Firefox

Well for me, internet explorer has a lot of pop ups. Firefox blocks all the pop-ups for you. Internet explorer also can get viruses and spyware easily while the security settings on Mozilla Firefox guard against most viruses and spyware. Another cool feature is that i know my internet explorer wouldn't let me open new tabs on the same window but you can do multiple ones in Firefox. It also has a download feature which lets you know if anything is being downloaded onto your computer!!!

Internet explorer is more prone to errors and viruses.
The new IE 7 is even more prone to fail. It causes more issues than the older IE 6.

Opera is better then Firefox as it is lighter and does not take much space.

Firefox is, in my oppinion, greater suitable to information superhighway Explorer in each way. it somewhat is speedier, safer, much less puzzling to apply... however the single element that wins me over repeatedly are the upload-ons. There are hundreds! Adblock Plus - block commercials - flash commercials, banner commercials, etc. and shop the bandwidth and the cookie hassles that those could have created. get carry of Statusbar - places your downloads on the backside of your show instead of an nerve-racking pop-up. FoxyTunes - administration your music participant with out leaving Firefox. Noscript - strengthen your protection via in basic terms allowing JavaScript while it somewhat is needed! CookieSafe - strengthen your privateness via in basic terms allowing cookies while they're needed! AJAX Yahoo! Mail - open and study a million to 10 to twenty e-mails all on one web site. All in all, the internet's lots much less puzzling and greater exciting in Firefox.

Hi,

This is a hard one and in most cases comes down to personal preference. They both have strengths and weaknesses.

I recommend try both and work with the one you feel most comfortable with. Personally I prefer Firefox. I like the baseline features better than IE and enjoy the extensions available.

Ciao

I love FF because of the built in popup blocker (better than IEs, if IE even has one O.o) and the tabbed browsing helps me out a lot. Also some of the extensions are cool; for example being able to automatically download etc. Besides that there's a search bar in the top right where you can get other sites to search: for example, I can search google, websters dictionary, ebay, wikipedia, and a bunch of other sites just by selecting that site and typing in my search

Mozilla is less phrone to viruses, spyware and all that trash.

Since Explorer is the dominant browser, and there is a larger installed base of it, security threats for Internet Explorer are more common than those that exist for Mozilla.

Mozilla is a much safer web browser. It also has many more features, and allows the users to make extensions and different themes that will improve your browsing.
