I use Resolve (you can buy it at a grocery market or Walmarts) and it is a liquid. I have used it for years and my carpet comes out clean and it smells so fresh afterwards. Good Luck! If you need too you can mix oxiclean with hot water and use that too for very soiled carpets!

I used to have off-white carpets and a cat that threw up ALL the time. That combo taught me the best way to clean a carpet.
First and foremost, rent a big red Rug Doctor rug cleaner for a night. It usually runs 19.99 plus tax (at WalMart or your local grocery store) and it's the best rug cleaner I've ever used.
I've had my carpets professionally cleaned AND I've owned a high-end Bissell carpet shampooer and the rented RUG DOCTOR kicked their butts in the ability to clean and make carpets look close to new.
Use hot tap water in the intake tank and not as much soap as they recommend. The hot water is really what does the cleaning. Too much soap attracts future dirt. Also, I've never needed to buy the defoamer. I think that's just so they can make more money on product sales.
For specific spots or for grundgy heavy traffic areas, use Resolve before running the cleaner - both the liquid and the powder type are very good on specific stains.
Soap one or two runs on a strip of carpet, then spend two or three runs at rinsing the area. Rinsing it well is a big key. Last but not least, do not oversoak an area. If you've made two to three rinsing passes on a particularly bad area, STOP and come back to it went you're done with the room. Oversoaking or oversoaping are counterproductive.
I'm not kidding this is really the best way to try to save an overall bad carpet or keep a nice one clean. I'm 43 and have been cleaning my carpets for at least 23 of those years. It doesn't take that much time or that much effort and you'll be pleasantly shocked at how well it works.

If they are so bad you might need to have a professional come in or you can rent carpet cleaning materials from your local grocery store.
