I prefer then both. Christmas is about giving and Halloween is about respecting the dead.

Here a little history on Halloween
Halloween begin with the ancient Celts, pagan nature worshippers. The Celts mark their new year on November 1. From October 31 to November 2, the Celts celebrated a 48-hour festival, the festival of Samhain. They believed that Samhain, the lord of the dead well gather the souls of those who had pass on throughout the previous year and return them to life. The good will return as humans and the bad will return as animals. The families and friends of the sinners tried to persuade Samhain into giving lighter sentences. They prayed and gave sacrifices to Samhain.

In the first century, the Roman Empire invaded and conquered the Celtic territory. Influencing Celtic and Anglo-Saxon customs and traditions, two Roman festivals mixed with the festival of Samhain. There are Feralia day (February 21), was to honor the dead but essentially amounted to mass drunkenness and Pomona Day (November 1), was held in honor of Pomona the goddess of fruit trees.

In A.D. 313, for the first time in history, the pope is backed by Roman civil authority and the power to decide what was Catholic and what was not. The Pope Boniface IV, in A.D. 609 changed Feralia into All Saints’ Day and instead of honoring all of the dead, it is now just for saints and martyrs.

Meanwhile, the Celts were still conforming to the festival of Samhain. Pope Gregory IV tried replace it by moving All Saints’ Day from May 13 to November 1 and extending the festival to the entire church. Later on All Saints’ Day became known as All Hallows Day and October 31 became All Hallows Eve and, finally it was changed to Halloween. In A.D. 988 the Catholic Church created another day that is All Souls’ Day, held to commemorate “all the faithful departed, those baptized Christians who are believed to be in purgatory because of they sins on their souls. One day for all the saints and one day for all those believed to be suffering in purgatory.
