That and because branching out that far could create problems not everyone will love the burgers like us on the west coast different climate different taste, the company couldnt end up losing money. I used to work there and they base thier business off quality and the speed of the way we do things. If one store has lazy people working thier they will lose business and the reputation they have. Which is also why they only have a selected menu because if they had chicken fingers, salads nachos and all that it would slow down thier process of cooking and distrubiting.

Dont worry fellow Michiganders. They can't take our precious gem known as the Coney Island. No fast food places compares to the Coney Island.
Flightmed, where is a Steak and Shake in Michigan? I haven't seen one in SE Michigan

In and Out is still a private family owned company, and because of their strict quality control they only open in locations that are central to their distribution bases. That way the food that they serve is of the absolute freshness. If they opened locations outside of their base, that would result in substandard quality.
There is a huge battle going on in the family though; the daughters in law want to go nation wide and the original family wants to keep it local.
