I agree that ADO is probably the best option. I've taken buses all over Mexico and have always felt safe, as long as you take the luxury buses. I've taken the Mexico City Oaxaca bus journey on ADO, it takes about 6 hours and will cost you about $40 USD.
There are also trains, though. For example the Oaxaqueño leaves Mexico City (Estación Buena Vista) in the evening and arrives in Oaxaca in the morning. It's a beautiful journey.

You can buy bus tickets online at www.ticketbus.com.mx
Flying between MEX and OAX takes about 1 hour and will cost you about $250 return. That's a good option if you can afford it.

Definitively ADO is the best bus line between Mexico City and Oaxaca City. They have a luxury non-stop (6 hours) service called UNO and one way tickets are 55 US dollars. Other ADO non-stop services start at 33 US dollars and will take you there in 6 and a half hours. You need to take a taxi from the airport to the TAPO terminal. ADO stands for Autobuses De Oriente, UNO stands for Uno, number one, and TAPO stands for Terminal de Autobuses de Pasajeros del Oriente. TAPO is the only one with departures for Oaxaca and is only 3 miles from the Juarez airport MEX. You can find more bus information and different arrival terminals in Oaxaca City (I recommend the one labeled "Oaxaca, Oax.") at https://www.ticketbus.com.mx/ticketbus/inicio.jsp

basically all the answers can give you lots of tips..
about buses companies you can chose between ETN and Primera Plus.
Dont worry about robbery at the buses, they are safe companies. As soon as you arrive at the airport you should ask at an information point, there is a bus service with different destinations that goes from the airport to different cities, check if there is any that goes to Puebla and from there you can get another bus from the same company that will take you to oaxaca..
good luck in our country!

There are two bus terminals close to the International Airport (Benito Juarez). I would recommend using the terminal Oriente or TAPO; buses to and from Oaxaca leave from it. There are many lines, and I would recommend ADO. Although the road to Oaxaca is not that dangerous, TAPO is and you should be careful. You should check out if there are buses that would go directly from the airport to Oaxaca, although I would believe they are more expensive.

Bus travel is very dangerous in Mexico due to robberies. It´s best to find a direct route if possible with no stopovers whatsover to lessen the chances of someone getting on the bus and robbing people at knife/gunpoint. There is a bus terminal at the airport and the second closest one would be Terminal del Norte, which has a subway stop.

you can buy a ticket from ADO, is the largest bus company, and also they have a first-class section, that is relatively cheap, and is very comfortable. I believe his website is ado.com.mx
Also, there are almost daily flights to Oaxaca, you should check that also.
