What a shame you are doing this. I know many people don't want to spend time looking after a garden, but there are compromise solutions that will enable you to have a tarmac area and also leave some soil (perhaps round the edge, or in one corner) where some living plant could be planted.

Plenty of shrubs will give you lovely blossom in the spring, berries to cheer you up in the autumn; local wildlife will have some little haven there . . . . . what's not to like?!

Spray the whole lot with Round Up. This will kill everything including the roots. Buy at your nearest garden centre.

if the guys who do your tarmacking do the job properly then you have to do nothing...they will excavate to a depth of 12 inches.. 6inches of hardcore ..4 inches basecoat ..2 inches topping ..only a tree root could get through that ..but i expect them to be rubbish ./..you deserve em .

Just use a weed killer and it will destroy them.
Of course after this you will have to restore the ground to a more natural way.
