Can a store deny to serve you based on the type of credit card you are using?
In the state of PA, I get an EPPI Card for Alimony. I have been denied using this card to make a certain purchase. If the signs all say they take Master Card (which this card is) can they honestly tell me they will not let me make my purchase using this card?

If they refuse to serve me they will have to have a legal reason. I do know that. They have to base it on something. Other then refusing the way I want to pay. I been a customer of this store for over 10 years.

I was never rude, to the poster who said this. Obviously you are.
Also they do take debit cards.

Let me further say, this isnt the card being denied.. It's the store refusing to even run the card.. They look at it and say we dont want to except that kind of card.

Other then walking up, trying to make my purchase, being pleasant with the cashier. I am not doing anything wrong. I am certinaly not buying anything illegal.. lol. I am always polite and even polite when I was refused. I just wanted some feedback to see if there was anything I could do. Thank you everyone.

Although I am not familiar with the system you are describing, I think I know a probable cause of the problem. The merchant accepts a certain credit card, adds them up for a week, then sends them to MC. MC will then send them a check MINUS their service fee which ranges from 2-7%. Perhaps the limitation you are facing is built into the law that will not permit MC to charge this fee to the merchant. Therefore, MC will not permit the merchant to accept this card.
A possible resolution, or at least an explanation, might be available from the MC 800#, usually on the back of the card. Good Luck and remember, at least you're getting your alimony!

Sadly, any business can refuse the right to serve you or take any of your business. But the upside is that if they deny you service their MUST be a valid reason for it, if they are contacted by the better business bureau. I dont know your whole story so is their anything you are doing wrong? Most places take MC, i dont know ANY store managers that would refuse a customer based on the card they used unless they were either rude, disruptive, or their card doesnt take...

Some states don't allow state-issued cards to be used for certain types of purchases such as tobacco or alcohol. You might ask the store clerk if that is the reason you are being denied use of your card.

contact the issuer. the county. i doubt they can legally deny it. i have no problem using my visa card issued by ohio for child support. why are you even handing them your card. i use mine as a debit and rarely hand it to anyone.
mikeysco. think about the smoking bans. it takes the choice away from the business owner and puts it in the governments hands.
" a store always has the right to decide how, and more importantly, *IF*, they will do business with you."
the smoking ban takes rights from a business owner. it is not a health issue. it is government interfering with a business persons rights.

I don't know why they couldn't/wouldn't take it if they also take debit/credit card transactions.
I know the retail business but not state initiated transactions. For example, I take debit cards as credit because my business is too small to bother with dealing with the EFT console.
Businesses can, as a hard and fast rule, deny service to anyone as long as they are not violating your civil rights. e.g. race, religion, etc.
Ask the manager why they can't do it. Maybe it's something beyond their control.

I don't know the laws of PA so i really can't help you there but if they didn't serve you and they take your credit card then you need to talk to the manager because that wouldn't fly with me i would be talking to the manager soon!

They should take your card it says Master Card. You should call the better business bureau and investigate to find out if they are allowed to deny you. Good luck

If they take MC, then they should allow you to use that card. If they won't, then just take your money elsewhere.
