I have a western digital usb external hard drive full of music and stuff that was hooked up to my pc windows laptop. Can I just plug it into the macbook usb and have it read the songs. Or do I have to convert files, format the ext hd or something else?

Mac OS should be able to read any hard drive format used by windows. (The reverse is not always true.) If the music files are .wma (Windows Media Audio) then iTunes may not be able tor read them. If they're .mp3 or .m4a (they most likely are), then they should work fine.

It should be working fine as you're getting the pop up saying new hardware installed. Maybe you're just not seeing it. Open My Computer, press F5 which will refresh it in case its not done so. Normally a standard PC will only have one HD drive "C" ... in there you should see the other one. D might also be your CD/DVD drive so you could see 3 altogether. If that doesn't work, try plug it into another USB port ... it should pop up with another installing hardware bubble. I've never seen an external drive supplied that wasn't formatted already so not sure if that could be a problem also... mmm... Good luck!!

As long as the hard drive is formatted in FAT32 and not ntfs the Mac will be able to read it.

I hope it is feasible. I can give you a link that deals with hard drive problems. Some RAM/hard drive problems can be easily fixed yourself by using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful. Try this site, if you can get what is required.
