The engine will rev 200-300 rpms while traveling at 60 mph plus even though pressure on the gas pedal is constant. Does the same thing even with the cruise control on. Recently had fuel system cleaned, spark plugs changed and new distributor cap. Thanks for any thoughts. 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.2L V-8

Lots of things can make your torque converter unlock and lock. Barometric sensor, vacuum leak, throttle position sensor. It's almost sure it's something in the electronic control and not the tranny itself, so don't let some crook tell you that it needs a rebuilt transmission.
It doesn't really hurt anything. It's just annoying.

Sounds very much like your torque converter clutch periodically disengaging. Before replacing anything, have someone with a scanner (NOT a code reader) take a ride in the car and monitor the command data to the TCC solenoid. It will cost you a few dollars, but will still be cheaper than throwing parts at it.

sounds to me that the throttle position sensor is out of adjustment or a simple vacuum line leak. anything that
is happening to the vehicle that you are not controlling yourself
should be look at by a professional. i meant to ask, does the vehicle increase speed at the same time? if it does not the transmission sensors could be going bad also, or the ecm(we hope not), thats the main computer.

I recently had a Dodge 3500 Ram Van that did the same thing.
The mechanics could never tell me what the Hell was wrong, nor could they ever repair it. It must be a Chrysler defect. I've heard of others with the same annoying problem. I know, it REALLY PISSES YOU OFF, especially on a long trip with them stupid surges, almost constantly. You have my full sympathy. I finally sent this Dodge on its way. I had ENOUGH!!!
