Unless a pompom is different for knitting, the basic way is to wind a long bit of yarn (or cording, etc.), around and around a rectangle of cardboard (or something else flexible or bendable)... then gently work all the yarn loops off the cardboard and keep them together as a unit.
Next tie the loops tightly around their middles with more yarn or a thinner cord (then will look sort of like a figure 8). That will leave a set of loops on one end of the bundle and a set of loops on the other end... cut all the loops at their curves so that all the ends are now straight (not loops). Fluff out and you have a pompom (the lasp loop can be left long and untrimmed if you want a tether to attach the pompom to something else with).

The thickness of the finished pompom will depend on the number of revolutions made around the cardboard, and also the thickness of the yarn used.
The diameter of the finished pompom will depend on the width of the cardboard (in the direction of the revolutions).

take yarn and wrap it around your fingers several times then cut yarn. then cut a piece of yarn and tie it in the middle of the yarn you wraped around your fingers and then cut then loops and then arrange to look like a pom pom.
