Hi there! I am currently on Ortho-Tri Cyclen Lo and let's say I experience a bout of diarrhea today that could possibly continue. I am on the third day of my last week of active pills, and I know I have to use a back-up method for a week. If the week extends into my placebo week, do I have to use condoms during the placebo week or can I use no back-up once the placebo pills start?

Thanks so much!

The diarrhee you experience is nothing real big (maybe it dos not have anything to do with the pill even) unless this becomes a continuous problem. If this is the case, it might be a good idea to talk about this with your doctor.

As for the pregnancy protection, yes, you should use a condom even when you'll begin your placebo week. It is usually recommended to use a back-up protection (such as condoms) until you've been on a full cycle of your pill. This let your body time to adjust to the hormones. It's safer that way.

diarrhea shouldn't affect the absorption of the pill that much. However, you should always use a condom if you are having sex and don't want to get pregnant or contract diseases.
