Definition of surface area: A two-dimensional measurement of the size of the surface of an object.

Definition of volume: Volume (also called capacity) is a quantification of how much space an object occupies.

When the surface area increases, the volume increases and the rate of diffusion gets faster.

When the surface area decreases, the volume decreases, the rate of diffusion slows down.

This is similar to evaporation.

I agree with the previous definitions of surface area and volume. Usually, these topics come up when biologists consider limits on cell size. Larger cells have trouble with the surface area: volume ratio. As a cell becomes larger, its surface area doesn't increase as much as its volume increases. Since diffusion happens through the plasma membrane on the outside of the cell, a larger cell doesn't have an adequate amount of plasma membrane to allow materials to diffuse into the larger volume at a fast enough rate for the cell to meet all its needs.

The correct term is surface area-to-volume ratio meaning that the surface area of the cell determines how fast or slow a substance can diffuse in and out of the cell.
