how big should a tunnel be for people to travel through and how far down should it go before opening up( to stop cave-ins)

It depends on what you are smuggling. If it's illegal aliens, and the tunnel will be less than a mile, they can crawl, so 30" is as tall is it needs to be.

If you are smuggling drugs, you can afford a walking height tunnel. Six feet is plenty (don't hire tall mules).

If you are mining, sell the rights and/or land to professionals; they'll know what to do.

As for cave-ins, depth has little to do with it. Yes, soil is stronger the deeper you go, but there is also more weight bearing on the opening beneath. Soil type is the more critical factor. In any even, internal bracing is required, as is more detailed research on your part. Hire a soil engineer.

I really do not know but maybe you can ask the guys who had the tunnel between Washington and BC. I think they could help you out, not sure what jail they are in. But they may have better advice than anyone else as they did it, been there, and now learned from their mistakes, and maybe willing to share their wisdom.

what are you making the tunnels out of? If it's snow, forget it. Too many people have died here in Canada by being snowed in a tunnel....
