This is a follow up to an earlier question about using my computer to record directly from my guitar. Someone mentioned using a "multi-effects unit, with all the effects and amp simulators".

Is a multi-effects unit what I need to be able to connect my big guitar jack into the computer?

If so, what are some popular manufacturers and models for such a product?

Thanks.

Now I think I understand. I already have a multi-effects pedal. I'll connect the guitar to that then the pedal to the computer and I'll start with the volume low.

Now you're crossing your equipment.....

The amp modeler I referenced is GUITAR equipment. What you need now is COMPUTER equipment. Check out the soundcard in your computer, and make sure that it can support the recording software you'll be using. Then, find an interface with 1/4" inputs, XLR microphone inputs, and a power supply.

Or, you can buy a cheap adapter from Radioshack to convert the 1/4" plug on your guitar output to fit the 1/8" mic input on your computer.......about a buck.

And last time, I told you some good brand names: Line 6, Pod, etc.

I not sure what you been told, and it may be the best way.
How we do things in "Real Ville". Outputs on "Anything" are small AC signals. When they are input to a Stereo they go through an Amplifier to increase the Volume. So, it very basic. You want your output to go into an input. You want to Couple your Muti-Effects with the Guitar, so, run the guitar through your muti unit and run that output into your computer input!!! Usually the Microphone Jack work if it Stereo or use another input source for Stereo. The Mic is the easiest. Not have to spend a lot of money on Commercialism Hoopla. Once on the Computer you can use a Mixing Program to add more Music; Piano, Drums etc. and you be Jamin'. ;-)
Warning!!!! Always turn your Output Volume down and slowly increase to a good input volume this way. IF, you have the output volume too high you MAY blow your input Transistors and on a computer they not very big or in other words "Handle a large Input Signal". So, TURN the Volume down on your Output. Example; on your Guitar, those knobs that say; "Vol." turn them down!!! If the input too low when you record, then you know to turn it up a little at a time until it correct!

You must plug your guitar into something first: an amp, or a multi-effect (I use aqnd love Boss GT-8 but it's about $500. But it's worth it.) Many amps and most multi-effects have a "line out" where you'd plug another cable (lead) to your PC. It has some kind of audio-input, so then do what the first guy said (Radio Shack, a cheap adapter).
