Long story short, I've been seeing a soldier on and off for about a year. Things moved into the more serious talk in the last 8 months while he was away in Iraq. For Christmas I was able to spend some time with him and he gave me his military dog tags as a present. He told me what they meant and said he had never given them to anyone but his family. What exactly is the significance of these? I was estactic when he gave them to me...it is a BIG deal right?

You know, of course, that just by asking this question, you've already acknowledged the answer.

It was obviously a big deal to him (he wanted you to have something that is very close and personal to him - AND - he can get into a bit of trouble for "losing" his tags when he's back on base. He apparently knows that and decided to give them to you, anyway.)

And it's apparently already hit you pretty hard because you know how much they mean to him and you are already glad he chose to offer these to you. Sounds like a step he's taken to be exclusive and move your relationship together forward. You can ask him if you like. It's probably your best course of action at this time.

What matters most here is what they mean to you. To the rest of us they dont have as much meaning as they do to you. This is something personal between the two of you and is actually none of our business. I just hope he has his dicharge before giving his dog tags to you. It sounds as if they mean the world to you so hang on to them and cherish the memory. Congrats on finding your soul mate and good luck in your relationship and have a real fantastic new year

His dog tags are how they identify his body if he is killed or lost in action. Some time it is years if they even find a body at all.

I guess it could be a good deal. they are only an object though, you cant really base how he feels about you off of that.

i think it just shows you how much he cares about you and wants to protect you. i think it is just a little thing to show he cares and is thinking about you and he hopes you are thinking about him too.
