I'd like to recommend Edgar Allan Poe's "The Complete Stories"; his short/long stories there are among the best if you want to experience horror/suspense through reading. For example, "The Tell-Tale Heart", "The Purloined Letter", "The Fall of the House of Usher", etc.

"The Amityville Horror" by Jay Anson is pretty scary. It made me check out the shadows in the corners of the room when I was reading it. Probably the scariest book I've ever read.

Other good horror novels I'd recommend are:

"Pet Semetary" and "'Salem's Lot" by Stephen King
"Ghost Story" by Peter Straub
"The Books of Blood" (all six volumes) by Clive Barker
"Midnight Mass" and "The Keep" by F. Paul Wilson
"Phantoms" by Dean Koontz

Try the lesser known book, "The Dark Half", by Stephen King; its premise is similar to that of "The Secret Window", but with a more paranormal twist. It's hard to scare me, but that book did it!

For an older, more classic story, try "The Haunting of Hill House", by Shirley Jackson. A few films were based on it (most recently, one with Liam Neeson & Catherine Zeta-Jones, called "The Haunting"). Even if ghosts don't scare you (they don't scare me), you WILL find this very disturbing!

Another great horror writer was Algernon Blackwood. Try to find a collection of "Ghost Stories" by him and read "The Willows". It has a much more paranormal bent and is truly frightening!

The Cal Leandros series via Rob Thurman is extraordinary. (same author has yet another series called Korsak Brothers series which one character is ex-mob. that is corresponding to the Cal Leandros series which I enjoyed greater effective) The Harry Dresden archives novels via Jim Butcher are a number of my favorites as properly. The Saga of Recluce books via L.E. Modesitt Jr. have some somewhat exciting concepts in it yet could properly be long and somewhat dry. some human beings I pronounced them too enjoyed them and a few did no longer.

Give Chuck Palahniuk a try. He wrote Fight Club. It is different but really good stuff.
