I currently run Windows 98 which I know is so so ancient. I got a new Dell for Christmas and I just want to save some stuff from this computer before I chuck it out.

two possibilities.

I agree with the above answer. If you have XP, the driver already might be on your PC (if you have a newer copy of XP). If it's an older copy, then the drivers for that new travel drive probably didn't exist yet when your operating system (XP) was installed.

If you have ME or 98 (Windows) - or have an early copy of XP, rather than a recent one, then you probably need the disk that came w/ your drive. If no disk came with it, go to the manufacturer's website (the maker of the drive), and look for a "downloads" or "drivers" link to download the software that will enable your PC to see and use and interact w/ the drive.

Then it will show up in My Computer as another drive.

Another possiblity (if there's some corruption w/ your XP operating system), is it could take a while (up to 5 minutes) for your computer to see it, so while you don't see it right away, if you close Windows Explorer and (leaving the drive plugged in), wait 5 minutes and then open it again it might be there this time.

good luck and God bless you.

You don't just plug it in -- it has to be installed. When you inserted the drive, didn't you get the message "new hardware detected"? If you have WinXP, the driver might be on your PC, then again, not. If the driver is not on your PC and a CD didn't come with it, you will have to go online to the manufacturer and download, then install, the appropriate driver.

After you have installed it, open My Computer. Right-click on the item and select "create shortcut." You can then cut/paste or drag the shortcut to the desktop for easy access.
