IN MY EXPERIENCE (I don't speak for anyone else)
First of all, some people talk about "Omg I have awesome gaydar". And they're all kinds of proud of themselves for recognizing stereotypes. Stereotypes are powerful enough to drive straight men away from activities they would otherwise enjoy, and draw gay men into activities where they think they may be accepted / find other gay men / drive away people who are going to be assinine to them. So, yeah. You don't get any kind of gold star for recognizing the stereotype; sorry. For me, there's first of all ALL kinds of signs that someone is interested in YOU. And the ability to recognize those are pretty much universal. THere's different forms of "the gaze" (from playful eye contact, to full-out eye sex). And other body language. There's also something about knowing how you behave as a gay person, and noting that behavior in others. You know how you check out guys without wanting them to notice; there's a good chance you'll notice something like that when someone else does it (even if it's not to you). So, these are just the things I noticed. I'm sure there's other body language that I pick up on, but couldn't put my finger on. And there's always going to be people who are better at it than others also: hence some people claim "gaydar".

No, gaydar can pick up signals from straight men too. The signals are not always meant to mean they are gay. it's about the way you look at each other. the direct look in the eyes for a little longer than normal is usually a signal that they are interested. there's other more subtle signs but you can only pick up on them if you are looking for them I'd say gaydar works most of the time.

No, its a skill you "hone." By practicing it, your able to get "better" at spotting others. Just look and watch, if they are interested, they will "look back" but for a second longer than a straight guy would. Then walk on, look back. If they are looking back too, stop, and wait or move back and smile. This is where you find out if your Gaydar is working or not.
Basically, the more you practice the better you get. However, its not going to work if they aren't interested!

No, it's just your intuition in a way. I have a theory that gay people "develop" this because when we were in the closet growing up, we are always trying to seek out "our kind" in a way. So we learn to pay attention to the little details in the actions of another person that are similar to ours. In our quest to find similar people, we develop the ability to distinguis people who are "like" us. But that's just my theory anyway. I guess gaydar is just careful observations.

No. It is an instinct. A hunch. Like suspecting that you left your house keys on your coffee table and you locked yourself out of your apartment.
