It has been suggested to me that it could have been a native rat as I live near the bush, but the cord was not gnawed it was sliced. Has anyone else every experienced anything like this?

I agree with you being active at night. Maybe look and see where you keep your knives or scissors or whatever and see if anything is out of place or even missing. If you did it, then you may have placed them back in a different spot. It's possible someone else did it while you were sleeping but not too likely...
Are you a heavy sleeper? If not then you would have probably heard someone walk in, cut a cord, and leave.

I have a friend that wakes up and flips out on everybody and is fully functional but doesn't remember a bit of it the next day.
I have another friend who wakes up at night and raids the kitchen and has no memory of it. It is because of the medication she takes though.
Maybe some of this will be helpful to answering your question

Calling the police is impossible because your telephone cord was sliced...

I would ignore it for right now, but if something else strange happens notify the authorities.

It's Comcast... they're blackmailing you! They want you to switch to broadband...

I have no idea as you can see, but I don't think animals do that. It could still be a thread, so I would leave the cord there (don't touch it!) and call the police. Have them fingerprint it.

Its a possibility that you might have been active in your sleep. I went thru a phase of that and even made sure I threw my car keys in a glass of water and put them in the freezer at night to make sure I did not try to drive. At first though when it was happening, I was very confused about the things that I would wake up to in the morning. ie. my garbage can in the middle of the kitchen floor?

I still wonder if a mouse got into your room
and bit the cord in two. I can't think of anything
except some sort of critter doing this!

If your windows or doors sowed no sign of forced opening you have either misbehaving pets or mice! But to be safe, call the police.
