One of the really neat, very Washington things, is blown glass items made out of ash from Mt. St. Helens. These are awesome! I don't know where you can get them in most towns/cities, but I would think any boutique that carries unusual items. I watched them being made at one of the Mt. St. Helens interpretive centers. If you can go to Mt. St. Helens, I highly recommend it!
Other ideas are anything that is handmade in the state, again, small boutiques are often the best resource for these kinds of things.
Enjoy!!

local beer if you can carry the bottles; beer t-shirts if you can't take the beer itself
UW or WSU stuff (University Bookstore has both)
Fran's chocolates ($$$, but good)
Mountain bars (if you like them) cheap, and not so good IMHO
Dilettante chocolate-covered fruit
Washington wines
Stuff--jewelry, books--from Seattle museums like the Burke
Jones Soda (esp. the really weird flavors), again if you can carry something heavy/breakable
You said "gifts" plural, so I'm guessing you don't want anything mega-expensive. There are shops called "Made in Washington" in some of the malls. You can get cards w/ reproductions of Native artwork. Framed, they make nice gifts.
Something from one of the team stores--don't forget the Everett Aquasox (baseball) and Silvertips (hockey)--for sports fans.
Cards/prints of Seattle "landmarks" like "Waiting for the Interurban"--paint cheap Ikea frames for them.

Depending on the part of Washington State. I am from there originally. I recommend anything that has hucklberry, huckleberry laffytaffy and syrup are normally a big hit, also there is a winery called Latah Creek, they have a Spokane Blush that is amazing and their Huckleberry D'Latah (does not taste like huckleberry) is my favorite dessert wine, another big kick is ashes from Mount ST Helens

I can't really think of anything that America has that Canada doesn't have. If there was something, it probably wouldn't be legal there.
How about some firearms, Canada took away alot of their citizens means of defence.
Nothing says Your so special, I love you like a firearm.

Any artwork would be fascinating. The strong use of lines and colors in paintings are great. There are many different Indian groups that produce phenomenal artwork.

Some volcano ash is always great and it is everywhere, they also sell little bottles with it. There are also things with native american designs that are available at seatac and those knicknack stores.
The best in my opinion is the pirate stuff at the peir.

the nearby islands will have great and varied things, including smoked salmon, cedar planks to cook fish on, washington state cookbooks, or, even, make cd's of the trip and send it to friends.
