Speaking on NPR recently, an aide to the president stated the increase in troops the president will ask congress for in January will be to provide protection for the targeted Sunni population. The aide mentioned the president's plans for Iraq never included security for the population.
???????????????????????
What in the world was he thinking?
Was the world going to just magically become rosy after toppling the Saddam regime?

Apparently.

He thought, first of all, there would be tons of WMDs and so the whole world would embrace US invasion.

He also thought removing Saddam will make the entire Iraqi population fall in love with Americans.

Well, what else can you expect from someone with vacuum in his head ?

I think the aide mis-spoke.

Before the cease-fire was called off (for a second time) Rumsfeld explained that it could take six months or six years to resolve the mess in Iraq due to our duty under Geneva conventions to provide security forces. Our people are currently training the Iraqi forces to handle their own security.

When the Iraqi government determines that it can handle internal security, we will be free to leave and will have no further obligation to keep our troops there.

Bush defers to the pentagon and generals on tactical military matters like this, as he isn't an experienced military man himself. I think they thought that it would be easy to topple Saddam and that most Iraqis would be so happy to be rid of the brutal dictator that they would unite in joy, and it wouldn't be long before the country prospered in peace and security. Obviously that isn't what happened.

Al Qaida came to Iraq with the support of the Iranian government and started fomenting a civil war, pitting Suni againsd Shiite.

He didn't even secure the rights of the US military to enter Iraq thru Turkey, thus - our troops floundering around in the ocean for 3 weeks before the invasion. I'm amazed that Bush can find his asshole with toilet paper.

It means the security would be up to the new Iraqi government, not our troops.
