It's kind of moving spatial awareness - even if there were 1000 birds in flight moving very fast, they wouldn't crash into each other because of some sort of built-in system. Does anyone know the name for it? Thanks!

I don't there's a specific term for what you're talking about - a related term for the complex patterns that emerge from simple instructions - eg a flock of birds creates striking moving patterns when all each bird is trying to do is 1) Stay close to other birds 2) Don't bump in to them - is emergence.

A wonderful book which deals with these patterns - statistical physics and such applied to people is 'Critical Mass' by Philip Ball. Give it a try.

Regards.

There is no specific single technical term for this behavior that I am aware of. It is a form of "navigation", a more general term. Technologies developed for cars and planes designed to do this are generally referred to as "collision avoidance systems".
