That decision is up to you. The first 6 months are the most important I think. Anything after is between you and your child. I've been breastfeeding my daughter for 7 months, and I am hoping on making it til 12 months. Good Luck!

Whenever you feel he is ready to stop breastfeeding. Doctors recommend 6 months minimum to get all the immunities and benefits of breastfeeding, but one year is optimal. Some people go longer, so go shorter. I breastfed for only 6 months, but that was due to an illness I developed. It is best to breastfeed for a year, but you have to do what it is right for both you and your child. Don't listen to the people who try to push you in one direction saying you are harming your child by quitting at 3 months or you are one of "those" mom's for going to a year. Really...will those people still be around when the time comes? Probably not so just do what you feel is right.

Good luck!

The average around the world is until age 5 or 6 but in the USA it is dramatically less. In the USA, breastfeeding for the first 1 to 2 years is considered acceptable. This is due to the convenience for the mother, not the health of the child.

In most languages, baby teeth are called "milk teeth". When these teeth fall out is around age 5 or 6, when most children around the world stop breastfeeding.

The baby formula companies are extemely powerful and make a huge profit from selling formula. They cannot make any money off of breastmilk so they discourage mothers from breastfeeding. It is a shame.

Amazingly, I am getting negative feedback since the American public is brainwashed into formula feeding. Remarkable! How often on TV do you see babies being bottle fed versus breast fed? That's the forumla companies marketing to mothers.

the quick answer is: when he wants to stop. The World Health Organization suggests nursing for a minimum of two years. Marie Montessori, of the famous schools, suggested a minimum of three years, because, she said, she wanted the moms to stick around their babies long enough. Use formula and it becomes too easy to leave the child in the care of others, which is very damaging to children under 3.

In China, children are released from kindergarten to go home and nurse.

Comparing when other primates (we are primates biologically) wean from nursing, based on thigh bone length when nursing stops and other measurements suggest our children should nurse from between 4 - 7 years.

I've known many happy, smart, independent children who have. It's a wonderful mothering tool as well as your child's birthright.

I am from America. I nursed mine: 15 months, 11 months, 13 months, and 15 months. I weaned the second one early because I was sick a lot. Nurse at least a year. Then you can wean them to whole milk and not need to buy formula.

Nurse as long as you possibly can.....as long as it is working for the two of you. Every single drop of breastmilk is a benefit to both of you.....and the longer you nurse, the greater the benefits.

The AAP recommends nursing exclusively for 6 months and then beginning to add solid foods in addition to breastfeeding for the rest of the first year.

The World Health Organization recommends nursing for at least 2 years.

The world-wide average age of weaning is 4.2 years.

The natural age of human weaning is between 2.5 and 7 year, per anthropologist Kathryn Detwyler.

this is a question for your doctor. It all depends upon your and your babies health. Usually 6-8 monthes is long enough- nursing to long can actually ruin their teeth. Plus when their teeth start coming in- watch out. yikes !

My doctor recomended 1 year but I had to stop at 1 month becuase my supply quit. My son is 4 months old now and doing fine on formula. My advice would be to do it when you feel the time is right. Only you know your baby best.
