I take riding lessons. For Christmas, I got a riding helmet. Itis pink and shiny. The tack shop worker said the horses would be fine with the color. But, when i tried it out, the horse spooked, 4 times! There are mirrors in the arena and I think that she may have seen a glare from my helmet. Was it that or do you think it was something else? Also, do you think the tack shop would let me return it if that's the cause? I've already worn it but it costed 45 bucks and I might not be able to use it again.

A nice lesson Helmet is a great gift. State line tack has a nice variety of stretchy covers .. here is a link Steve!
Its not worth risking your neck or your fun to have a worry about that shiny thing frightening our horse. Weather it was a storm, a training problem or as you suspected , a shine off helmet, for a few dollars you can ride happy and much much safer! Please say you'll grab a nice cover and save the shine for later. Better safe than sorry!

the horse could defintely be spooking. I have a horse that aces in contesting, jumping, reining, and dressage, but she spooked like no tomorrow over the smallest things when I first had her. Once I was taking off my cheerleading warm-up jacket, its like a windsuit, and she went wild. She tried to buck me off, then galloped around the arena with me being dragged next to her, completely conscious of what was happening. The point is to sack your mare out, and show her not to fear the helmet. put a halter on your horse with the chain on the nose, as always, and bring the helmet out while someone holds her. slowly walk up next to her, and let her smell it. Rub it on your coat or between your hands, so she gets used to the noise. slowly place it next to her withers, a tiny bit at a time, and rub. you need to get to the point where you can do this all over her body without her really moving. this could take a long period, or even a day if she is very good. Always wear your helmet, and make sure the horse trusts it BEFORE you get on. Of course, it could have been something else, but probably not. It will just take time, and do this with other everyday items you may use as well (especially ones that are "scary"). good luck with it!

More than likely, the color isnt what is spooking the horse...its the fact that you're different. Although it could be a glare spooking the horse, but there are many things in most arena there are many things that could give off a glare. The best thing to do is get the horse used to it. Bring treats and comfort her.
GOOD LUCK!

I don't know if the horse is really spooking at the helmet, but even if she is, she needs to get used to it! Remember - the horse shouldn't control you - you control the horse!

It certainly sounds like your horse was spooked by the helmet. You might take the helmet back and tell them you tried it out but it doesn't work.

Steve.. your wearing PINK??
Ok, besides that, the color has NO issue here. Do you think the bright colors that jockey's wear scares the horses? No
Go back to your lessons, and stay in school. And then more lessons, because you obviously need them, very very badly.

yes or no. horses can see colors. some horses dont like yelloe or bule. maybe the horse does not like it. if you take lessons on diffrent horses, keep it if it cost that much!! Why are there mirrors in the arenas?
