I've always heard that if you think you're going crazy, you are not. So, it would be a lot worse to be told, because that could mean that you really are mad!

Your question is flawed because people who are mad believe that they are sane and that everyone else is mad.
In other words, it's impossible for a mad person to know that he's mad because they lack self awareness.

To know. Because if you're told, they could be lying, and you could go mad thinking you're mad but you're not. Have you ever seen that movie, Gaslight? It's freaky, but you see the effects of him keeping on telling her she's mad though she isn't.
