Liber, and dan are the only correct answers. With HEI system .045" With points system .035" With HEI and a 50K volt coil you can go up to .048" With a CD system like MSD 6A spark box, etc .055" On a side note, you MAY have the wrong spark plug in that engine. The autolite 85 is a 13/16" hex, gasketed seat, 3/8" reach plug The 1955-69 or 70 (can't remember for sure) Used the older big 13/16" hex, gasketed, 3/8" plugs 1970 or 71 up to 95 on gen 1 small blocks used a 5/8" hex, tappered seat, .460" reach plug Both types are 14mm threads so they will screw in, but if you use the wrong plug for the head style you have it won't seal in the compression, plug will reach in too far, or not far enough. If you have 1955-70 heads then use the autolite 85 If you have 1971 or newer heads you need the autolite 25 or 26

it should be on the sticker on top of the radiator. i believe .040-.045.check owners manual.
