Hi GoChrisGo,
No, you don't need any virus protection at this time. In fact, some anti-virus programs actually slow down your Macintosh. Sorry, Windows guys. There are presently no Macintosh computer viruses at this time. There will be some day, but as for now, there aren't any. Period.
And no Windows guys, it's not because there are such few brilliant Mac developers out there that can't develop one, it's just that Mac developers love their Macs and we love our Mac developers so much that we happily pay good money for their programming hard work. It's the security of the Mac OS X that has kept us virus free this many years, unlike our Windows colleagues.
Macintosh viruses have been developed by anti-virus companies as a "Proof of Concept". However, many of these viruses still require you to type in your administrative password for them to install onto your Macintosh. These have not been released out into the general public. And, if you ask me, they were created mostly to try to drum up some business.
Some day, there will be some kind of virus for the Mac, but until that time comes, don't worry too much about it. I know that some Windows-based IT guys have been panicked about Windows viruses being passed by unsuspecting Mac people, but this is pretty impossible too. When you get an e-mail with a virus in it, it just shows an attachment with a Window executable (with the .exe on the back of the file name). It won't have any effect on your Mac. Simply delete it.
Still, you have to go by what the IT guys require. In this case, there is a free anti-virus scanning software that's out, but I forget the name of it. You can probably do a search yourself here:

Just sit back and enjoy your Mac GoChrisGo.

It's not on the top of the list of vulnerabilities. We have a few labs of MAC's and normally do not install any virus protection.

Yeah.. Kinda, Macs are mostly immune. One of the good things about them is that.
