horses have a 180 field of vision just like humans. They can see the best forward and with their head down as when they are grazing naturally, this helps them be aware of predators. If they hear something in their peripheal vision areas they will turn their heads to see what it is.

animals that are (or could be) prey have eyes on the side of their heads. animals that are predatory have eyes on the front of their heads.
