It depends what type of "open call" you are going to- acting, modeling, singing, etc?

Well, when you get there, you will see many others that look like you all going for the same part/chance. Bring your info with you (a comp card or headshot and resume). Dress for the audition too. Ask your agent what it is for exactly and they can guide you on what to wear. The smart "wannabe" may bring a few different outfits just in case. Anyway, you will check in, be given a number after you turn in your paperwork and pics. You will wait nervously in a room with others (it's a great time to meet people in the biz and get leads for other jobs too!!). They will call you in and you will wither have casting agents there or the Model scouts. If it is acting or commercials, you will also be filmed. You'll get a minute or so to do what you are told so make it good.

Do your homework in advance. Rehearse, practice in a mirror and in front of others. This will help with nervousness. Also findout as much as you can about the part, the agency, the opportunity, whatever. Believe me, looks get you in the door, but talent and preperation keep you in the door and seperate you from the rest.

Good luck!!

It is plenty of time for the directors and those looking for the appropriate talent.

If YOU try to claim that there isn't enough time in that one minute, then you are not properly prepared and shouldn't be there. Remember, you may actually BE the best dancer, singer or actor at the audition, but may not be right for the role, so one minute is plenty if they are looking for a soprano to play the role of a ten year old orphan and you show up, at 5 foon, 10 inches singing alto.

So, whatever your talent is, make sure your best material shows up quickly. If the best piece is the spectacular finale of a song, then start with the last verse, not the first. If the piece you want to read is the emotional part at the end of a scene, then get to the end lines quickly.

Don't forget, even though they SAY they will give you a minute, they aren't promising you 60 seconds. They may cut you off the moment you walk on to the stage.

That's just the way it is.
