No one ever thinks that when they get married that they'll be getting divorced you get married with hopes of forever. So to get divorced is scarey and who wants to feel that kind of hurt twice?

If she is living by herself then one word- Freedom.

Her relationship could have been a one sided relationship where she had to do everything from cooking, cleaning as well as working outside the home. She finally has a chance to come home relax eat whatever she wants at whatever time she wants, and not have to worry if she made pork chops twice that week...silly I know but some friends claim their husbands whine about a variety that they want served during any given time.

She is probably very content chatting with you on the phone, seeing you on Friday evenings and/or on Saturday for whatever activities you two may enjoy. Now if you have been asking her recently about marriage and she is not at a point to see it in her near future..then don't bring it up again. If anything if she is interested in having a serious relationship with you she is growing more comfortable and learning about herself with this new found freedom and she will be a better person to live with.

Well it seems obvious. If you are married to someone for 30 years and it all of a sudden goes bad and ends in divorce, they are afraid it will just happen again.

the other possibility is that after being married for 30 years, the person just wants to enjoy their freedom for a while, or even for the remainder of their life.

Because that first marriage probably was enough for her. Then sometimes they maybe drawing some kind of pension and want to keep their last name. She might be like me , been there, done that and don't intend to go that route again. NO THANK YOU.

No reason to get married if the new relationship is fulfilling just as it is.
