My new mp3-player says that it doesn't play copyright protected (DRM) WMA files bought from online music stores. Does this mean I can only put songs from CD on to it or can I also buy songs online?

What it means is there are different formats and that mp-3 players will accept only certain type. Its a generic advisory, and you won't have trouble finding what you need from reputable sources. This is licensing issue, not one the will limit your selection, in fact lacking DRM format gives you more control over the music you purchase (edit, transferring, etc).

Consumers Guide has a review of some of the leading online music sources. It isn't a commercial site and a reputable publication not beholden to advertisers.

I have had good experiences with "Net Music"

You won't however be able to purchase music from Yahoo Music since it only sells wma (windows media player compat only).

You can get your music anywhere, many web sites sell you music but they don't have a legal right to do so. You can download them and listen to them but you can't copy them. So you need to check if the music is copyright protected before you buy it. Make sure the music store is reputable, IE: itunes music store. Look before you buy at the file extension, if it has ends with wma don't buy it.

get carry of Audacity, and open the music report with it. it could have the skill to open compressed/copyright risk-free data. Then bypass report > export and re-export it as an mp3 with a distinctive call, and play that instead. wish I helped.
