It is imperative that we stay there until the region is stabilized. If we pull out, and the Shiite gain control, then Iran gains control. Iran will used their clout to control the oil in the middle east putting the rest of the world at his beck and call. With Iran working toward nuclear capabilities, this will also but Israel's existence in jeopardy along with any other governments in the middle east that do not agree with Iran. Then this will all be brought to our shores along with Europe's door step. That is the simplified version so you will understand.

Because dumbass bush is willing to have more Americans and Iraqis killed just in hope that the country will be politically stabilized.Take this from an American, the troops are most likely to be pulled out of Iraq anyway by the end of 2008. Plus there are many Democrats(liberals) in our Congress that are trying to persuade Bush and the Republicans(conservatives) to get the hell out of Iraq. The situation in Iraq has gotten so bad now that the country is pretty much at civil war right know between the Sunni Muslims(minority, mostly in central Iraq) and Shiite Muslims(majority, mostly in southern Iraq) . Plus the Kurds of who live in northern Iraq has pretty much declared their independence making Iraq "not" a united country and all the insurgents are just making things worse. In other words because Iraq is such a mess for our military and cause the country's at civil war, Bush will soon be forced to pull the troops out of Iraq. In the United States, we just had our mid-term elections which will put Democrats in majority of both houses of Congress(House of Represntatives and the Senate). That means by January of 2007, Bush and his Republican party will not have the influence and power to do what they want to do in Iraq and there is likely to be dramatic change on the course in Iraq! P.S. For all the Australians please only hate Bush and his administration about Iraq and not the American people. We don't support him and more the 2/3 of us are agianst the war!

There's still a ton of money to be made, and Bush's supporters ain't leaving 'til they get every dime.
BTW - Speakeasy's posting about the Geneva Conventions is entirely fiction. That document doesn't have a single word about one nation's troops being required to stay until another's is ready to stand up. It's almost laughable to say that Bush is making a valiant effort to uphold the Geneva Convention. The entire debate about torture is taking place because Bush WONT uphold the convention. I can't imagine how these ideas get started.

Bush will not pull the troops out of Iraq as long as he is President and as long as there is no "victory". He does not want his legacy to be one of a failed and disastrous war that divided America and the world, and caused him to lose control of his own Party.

Because Geneva Conventions require that our troops remain there until Iraq can handle its own security and national defense.
Bush is making a praiseworthy effort to uphold Geneva Conventions. When the government of Iraq acknowledges they are prepared to take over the job, as we are training them to do, we will be free to pull out.

He got us in so deep that now we can't do that. I am hopeful though that we will start reducing the troops over there soon.

Because the consequences of defeat would be worse than the consequences of leaving them there to fight. Far worse.
Bush needs a better strategy for fighting the war, and I hope he comes up with one, soon.
