They can bite, same as spiders anywhere, but they'd rather run and hide. They are quite capable of breaking the skin (the fangs are sharp) and you would probably feel it. All spider can inject venom but Bristish spiders are generally not posionous to humans (there are a couple of exceptions).
See site below for independant refs;
Jordan e...there are a lot of posionous spiders in the world (not just 2!!!), the banana spider is NOT one of them.

There are more spiders in the world than anything else. Of the 900 million plus species that are known, every single one of them bites and around 80 per cent can bite humans and penetrate the skin.
In Britain it is very unlikely that you will ever be bitten by a spider
however, Those species that have been implicated in biting people include the Water Spider (Argyroneta aquatica), the Woodlouse Spider (Dysdera crocata), and the False Black Widows (Steatoda species). In other parts of the world, Sac Spiders (Cheiracanthium species) are known to bite, but there have been no records of this species doing so here.
In 2003, I was bitten by Nuctenea umbratica, a species related to the common Garden Spider that hides under bark of dead trees and can be found on fences. In this case, the spider was on a bath towel and I was bitten on the shoulder when I went to dry myself after getting out of the bath. I was living in a house on a farm in the country and the bathroom is an extension into the garden so it is likely that the spider had wandered in through the window. In this case I received two punctures and my arm was stiff and inflamed for about two days. This is a very common spider, which highlights how exceptional most spider bites are.
Whilst you COULD be bitten by a spider, you probably wont!
If you want to see how many spiders there are? Take a look in your garden, there are probably around 200 sitting out there waiting for a snack!
Just dont annoy them too much, if they gang together, they'd eat everything on, in and under the earth and seas!!!
By the way, studies suggest that 82 per cent of people in the world, have either eaten or at least had, a spider in their mouths during the night!
Sleep well!

I have horses, along with the horses I have stables, in the stables are some of the biggest spiders I have ever seen!!!!! I am a huge scardy cat and freak out when one of these not so likkle buggars scampers into my vercinity, I have been bitten before, it did break the skin but wasn't hugely painful and it didn't really bleed either I just had two puncture marks about 1cm apart, anyway I do not intend to get close enough EVER again to find out if they all bite or if the one that got me was just a freak.

Spiders in England can bite people in England. Spiders in England cannot bite people who are NOT in England. My references are: since it is impossible to occupy two spaces at once spiders cannot be in England AND biting people who are not in England. Verify it yourself.

What they usually do is lull you into a false sense of security by curling up and playing dead. Then, when you're not looking they jump/drop onto your head and tuck in. Though most don't break the skin, there is a couple that can give you a nasty nip. Best cure for this is to wash your hair with vosene. Spiders hate vosene and woll not entertain any scalps smelling of it. Best thing to do is to actually shower with vosene, hence covering the whole body with this pungent aroma and safeguarding from possible arachnid ambush.

I've never gone into it really but I am forever picking them up and throwing them out of peoples houses. The only one I ever really had trouble with was a spider in our conservatory that was big and spun a large web with a funnel in the middle. Now she did have a go at me when I picked her up, but there was no marks on my hands

I have heard that spiders could bite if they were bigger, its just the spiders we have over in england are too small and there fangs (or whatever) are too small to make any mark etc.
