It sounds like what everyone else is saying is right about a pulled muscle. Stress can cause your back to tense up, and you can end up injuring yourself a lot easier lifting light objects.

Use a hot compress for the first 24 hours, then rotate the Hot compress every 10 minutes with a cold one. Don't lift anything heavy until the pain is gone. Take Ibuprofen, and if you have any Naproxen or Flexaril laying around the house - consult a doctor to see if you should start yourself on those.

Another angle of this back pain....It's changed, which means it might not be back pain. Sometimes with heart attacks (Myocardial Infarctions), the pain may show up in other places. If the pain starts to radiate (even if it's not going down your left arm), or you have any question at all, contact a doctor.

With Heart attacks stereotypically pain goes down in your left arm, but sometimes the pain can stay in your shoulder, in your jaw etc. Sometimes theres no pain at all. If you get sweaty, or have any neurological deficits (tingling/lack of motion/feeling in your hands/feet) see a doctor immediately.

You probably are developing muscle tightness or spasms from working on a computer or some other habit where you are rounding your shoulders. Whatever the cause, the problem can be undone by stretching or therapeutic massage. Chiropractors and orthopedic specialists are very good a evaluating the problem and prescribing stretching and exercise. Therapeutic massage therapists can also provide relief.

Here's some stretches that might help:
