Yes the days get longer. The sun's reletive daily travel southwards ends on Dec. 21, or winter solstice. The sun is now moving again steadily north. So if you live north of the equator each day is now getting a little longer. If you live south of the equator each day is getting a little shorter.
The opposite happens On June 21, or the summer solstice. The sun once again starts moving relatively steadily southwards. So June 21 is the longest day for those who live north of the equator.

Yes. The winter solstice is the time of the year with the shortest day. After that, the days start getting longer until we reach the summer solstice, at which point the days start getting shorter again, which causes less direct sunlight to reach us, causing this frigid weather.
