If you get an iPod you can charge it without a computer, by plugging it into the mains. This does need a seperate apadtor but you can buy one that suits the plugs in america, UK and europe for about £20 with adaptors for each region, great for going away. You do need the computer for updating songs and you can only really use one computer unlike pretty much every other mp3/4 player by where you copy and paste the files to the player. The iPod needs iTunes.

There are many extra items to buy for your iPod. You can get a really good deal and buy a docking speaker system that chargers your ipod too. Or you can buy what they have is an adapter that just plugs into the wall and charges a little faster then through your computer.

The new ipods come with a USB cable to connect to the computer which acts as a syncing cable and a charging cable. The older one's used to come with a power adapter to plug into the wall to charge it, but the news one's don't anymore. Hope that helps.
