Good grief, do NOT write an essay about how will is linked with success!

Your personal statement can make or break your application, and is supposed to contain certain things. Here's the deal.

A successful personal statement is a literate, elegantly written essay in which the student highlights his/her strong preparation for her intended area of study, articulates her/his planned area of study and her/his goals after completing this study, and demonstrates his/her facility with current theory and practice in this area.

In other words, why do you want to go to grad school? How have you prepared for graduate study thus far? What will you study when you are there? What theories and methods do you find most congenial in terms of your area of study? With whom do you want to study, and why? (Name the scholars you've found most inspirational or influential. You've chosen the schools to which you're applying on that basis, anyway, aren't you? But don't gush, or "suck up." Just state your reasons for wanting to attend THAT particular graduate program.) And finally, what do you plan to do with this degree once you earn it?

Be sure to tailor each essay to each program, and to revise each essay for clarity and style. All those writing skills you've been developing over the last three or four years should be put to use now, when it really counts. :)

Best wishes to you!

I recommend you not write an essay that is off-topic. The application instructions should guide you here. This generally means write only about what makes you a good candidate for the graduate school. Think about why you want to be in the program (particular areas of expertise, supervising professors, connections with faculty, etc.), and what you can contribute to the program in terms of your own research/career interests.

Ask your professors what they think you should include in the essay. They know you, and probably know the program to which you are applying.

Make sure that the technical aspects of the letter are impeccable. Typos, spelling errors, and so on will not recommend you.

I'm doing my essays now as well. For the most part I ignore this optional essay. Unless you are going to say something that is sorely missing from your app you should do the same. The admissions folks hate reading extra essays since they have to read thousands so decide carefully.
