Purchase a live trap at any big box improvement store. Put peanut butter inside. Once gone, plug their entrance hole to keep more from comming in.

They sell traps for them. It's like a little cage so you won't hurt them and then you can drop them off far away from your home so they can't find their way back into your attic. I had the same problem once and this worked. Just make sure that once you have taken the squirrels out of your attic that you seal properly the hole they got in through so others won't get in. To repel squirels:

Put oil of peppermint with some water into a spray bottle, and spray around your attic on a regular basis.

I would try to run them out and plug the holes with 1"X1/2" welded wire. There are a number of traps , repellents as well as an electric fencer to control squirrels at this site http://www.pecanworld.com/SQUIRREL.htm

Where do you live? In Australia you can contact Wires on www.wires.org.au or phone 1800 641 188 and they will lend you a trap and remove the possum to a safe area or tell you who to contact. Do you have a similar organisation in America?
