This is what I know about your question. If you know anything about Astral Projection, it is where you can leave your body but your are still connected by the Silver chord which is attached to your Astral body and your phisical body at the Solar Plexis which is in the area of the diaphram just below the stomach. It takes practice and concentration to go far, but you can go anywhere you will your Astral body to go. There is a danger however as if anything cuts the Silver chord you are lost and the physical body will die. So caution is the word. I used to have a book by Ophele, Ophile, or something like that.
I experienced that once. I went to bed and concentrated on a bunch of different globular colors like the book said. Just as I was about to go to sleep I found myself in the hallway looking at my furnace. It was not a dream. I said to myself, " What am I doing here? I should be in bed asleep." That was when I came crashing back into my body so hard I shook the whole bed. My wife asked me what was wrong and I told her nothing, to go back to sleep. I did not want to tell her what happened. I decided not to do that anymore.
As far as I know the etheric plane is where your spirit goes after death. You should know that we are not mortal. The spirit survives death. We are here but for a while and we are supposed to learn certain things like being the best person you can be.
It is like going to school. If you fail a certain class you have to go back and take it again. If you fail certain aspects in your life, you have to come back as someone else into a position where you will be given the oppertunity to learn what you were supposed to learn to start with. That is the best way I can describe both.
You can go to your browser and type in Astral travel, or projection. You should find help there, or you could try to find the word Ophile.
Note: While it is possible to be shot in the head or heart, it is possible to survive. Nobody survives being shot in the Solar Plexis. That is where your Soul is.

My understanding is that the etheric plane is more in/around the material plane, while the astral plane is much more removed. I read a good bit about it in Israel Regardie's The Tree of Life.

I think it's the density of the plane. There are 7 levels, it is believed.
