I have a sweater made up mostly of: Acrylic/nylon/cotton/ and about 5 % angora. Its labeled dry clean only, if I wash it in the washer on the handwash cycle, gentle with cool water will it ruin it? I am just not feeling a trip to the cleaners for a silly sweater.

The Angora in the garment is the reason for the "Dry Clean Only" label. Angora is the hair of the Angora goat or of the Angora rabbit.

Most consumers don't read Care labels. The Federal Trade Commission requires that manufacturers have to list at least one safe method of care for each garment, but there may be several options available for correctly cleaning your garment. Dry cleaners are required to follow the instructions on the care label.

From experience, they can be washed by hand using a home-based product such as WOOLITE. Be sure to measure the garment; width, height, shoulders and length of arms. Some shrinkage may occur, but can be reshaped to its original size if dried flat.

If the sweater has angora, you really shouldn't wash it. Even a small amount will shrink, misshape and ultimately ruin a pretty sweater.

Sorry, but dry cleaning is really your only option.

Edit for clarity: Angora is wool, it is very fine delicate wool. Water will ruin it.

If the tag says that it should only be dry cleaned, I'd listen to the tag. If you really like that sweater I wouldn't risk washing it. Myabe it will get ruined and maybe it won't. Don't take the chance and just go get it dry cleaned.

I wouldn't do it. You can freshen a sweater in between dry cleaning by using steam from your shower and a little outdoor breeze.
