there is no rhyme or reason to life. no one is watching over us to protect the good and punish the bad. good and bad things happen to everyone. nobody likes to admit that much of it comes down to blind luck.

Good and bad are subjective judgements, based on perceptions that are limited to a particular time and space. There is no such thing as objective good or bad.

The experiences of a lifetime cover a broad range of happy and sad occasions. From one point in time, something may seem truly terrible; but from a different perspective, or after more time passes, the same event can prove to be the springboard to a truly amazing series of events that transforms your life for the better.

If you keep an eye on the bigger picture, instead of getting too caught up in the specifics of the moment, you get above the need to pass judgement on events. Experiences lack morality (they're neither good nor bad), what really matter are the choices you make in the face of the events that come your way.

The Tao te Ching says:
"Good fortune, bad fortune
One seems to bring benefit
the other to cause harm
But Heavens rejects them both
Both, in the end, tether men to this world"

Well, even when you are good, you have to live in this world. Everyone have to go through things there are no exceptions. If you live long enough you will have good and bad things happen in your life it is all in how you work with your problems. I know I'm a good person and good and sort of bad things happens in my life. I just use those things to grow off of. If you don't learn from those bad things, they will happen again. that is really why bad things happens so you can learn and grow in life. Read your Bible

That's the rule of life - its the most unbiased thing there is. Good and bad happens to all people. The better question to ask what do good people do when bad things happen to them. Hopefully they make the best out of the bad situation.

We all have challenges. And bad things as you perceive them may not turn out to be really bad. This is how we turn things into learning and hopefully we won't make the same mistakes again. Litterally bad things can and do happen to all of us at some time, but we accept it and be thankful that we can still go on and still love ourselves. Good luck

A better question would be why do good things happen to bad people?

Even for really good people there are things in life that will just happen...death, accidents, illness, divorce, loss of a loved one, loss of friendship, loneliness, mental breakdowns,...You just have to do the best you can to live your life to the fullest and not dwell on the bad parts of it. Enjoy everything you can and try to accept the rest. Aim to try to bring some happiness to others who might be worse off than you are.

Wishing you lots of peace in this life!

Karma maybe? Here is something which may help...

"You know, I used to think it was awful that life was so unfair. Then I thought, wouldn't it be much worse if life _WERE_ fair and all the terrible things that happen to us came because we actually deserve them. So now, I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe." - Marcus Cole, Babylon 5, "A Late Delivery from Avalon"

Because life is random. What you do in life does not affect your life unless directly involved with the action. If you jump off a cliff you will suffer a bad "thing". But, If you push someone off the same cliff it doesn't mean you will suffer a bad "thing" or good one. If Karma existed we wouldn't need laws, rules, police, etc.
