We live in the country, and there is a racoon nearby that wanders the neighborhood. Lately she has been getting much tamer & closer to the kids, and following them around while they are out playing. (I think because so many people feed her) Are they dangerous animals? Do they bite?

I have racoons here daily. They come right up to me and are not afraid of us. But you have to keep in mind that they are not tame animals. Racoons are very territorial, and very protective over their young. I do know someone who has had one as a pet for over 10 years, so I do believe that they can be easily trained, but I would not trust them with my children if I was not right there. Usually if there is one racoon there must be more, so maybe this one is relating itself to the children because it is also very young. Keep an eye on things. They do like human contact if they can get it, and trust that person. So I guess with children they are so innocent that a scared animal can relate to.

Raccoons are not pets and can get very protective of their young. They are known to attack domestic pets and have bitten humans. Worse, they are a carrier of Rabies. If you see unusual behavior in the raccoon, call your local animal control. Bottom line is I would treat it like any wild animal, especially around my kids.

yes they can bite. Rabid racoons especially. I would advise caution around your coon no matter how friendly he/she gets. We've had some go after our cats and dog.
