How do I clean and disenfect my hamsters cage? We are getting a new hamster and I want to clean out my current cage before I put him into it. Can I use a cleaner of any kind?

To clean the cage you can just use hot and soapy water. To disinfect the cage, you can buy a commercial pet cage disinfectant (large retailers carry them), use vinegar, or rubbing alcohol. Vinegar is a good disinfectant, and perfectly animal safe. Rubbing alcohol will evaporate quickly, so it will cause no harm to the animals. If you are worried about it you can wash it again after disinfecting, and you can also take consolation in the fact that rubbing alcohol is used in veteranary offices. I would not use bleach, there is a chance that you might not cleanall of it off since if your cage has any scrathed surfaces, it is more likely that it has permeated the surface and you will miss those spots when you rinse.

RE: Hamsters

I my experience, of all the small animals, the most suitable ones for small children are syrian hamsters and guinea pigs (which I also raise). Hamsters are much cheaper, easier to take care of, less smelly, and less noisy. Syrian applies to most all large hamsters. The general bias is that dwarf hamsters are more friendly, but from my own personal experience, that is not the case. From my experience golden hamsters are good for small children. They do not need a regular brushing, which is easy to do too roughly. They are also larger than dwarfs, so it is less likely that they will get hurt (they are also slower and harder to lose). When you get ready to buy a new hamster, ask the worker for their opinion on which of the hamsters is the most docile out of the ones that you like. Ask them if you and your children can hold them and play with them a bit to see which hamster is most accepting of handling. You also have to consider their response to the worker taking them out of the cage. If the hamster starts to turn and try to bite them or makes noises (they sound something like a staticy TV when angered) then it is probably indicant of them being less than friendly. I have had teddy bear, golder, satin, long haired, albino, and european black bear hamsters. From this I have found that my goldens were the most friendly, followed by my European black bear hamster. The European just doesn't like to be taken out of the cage. Also, I have found that young male hamsers or older female hamsters are best. Young males (2-3 months)are great since they can get used to you before testosterone takes over and they hit their sex drive. Older females (3-5 months)are good too since they are more seasoned and calmer.

the main suitable part of use is warm, soapy (dish cleansing soap) water. i do no longer understand what the igloo is made up of yet i does no longer possibility it. The water bottle may be soaked in warm soapy water, too. thoroughly cleansing and drying the two will take care of the possibility. moist-Tail is brought about via stress and oftentimes the immune gadget of the hamster that gets it somewhat isn't any longer too good first of all. additionally- a lot of people do no longer take it sluggish to earnings approximately thier pets, and so moist-tail impacts hamsters owned via those style of people who do no longer feed, sparkling, and water regulalrly, etc. So--you will be nice and the longer the cage sits there all sparkling the decrease the possibility. considering moist-tail isn't a viral affliction or an organic and organic affliction (like ringworm or different spore-producing illnesses) the germs are killed particularly and after the cage is thoroughly dry they could no longer stay to tell the story besides. No bleach in any quantity, lysol, mr sparkling, or something harsher than dish cleansing soap. those small animals are very gentle to chemical residue, and the effect must be organ or respiratory harm.

depending on what the cage looks like. If its just "dirty" use dawn dishsoap with warm water..be sure to get all the soap off. Bleach is kind of risky. Is you miss rinsing a spot, it could irritate your hamsters feet and skin...plus dawn does just as good.

If theres white residue on the bottom of the pan, calcium buildup- use vineger. Soak it In warm water and vinegar..scrub up the residue...vinegar looses the calcium. Be sure to remove all of the vinegar.

GOOOOD LUCK!
