Yes I do, when I can. Why? Because I was one. I was homeless for eleven years. Not because I couldnt find jobs, but because I couldnt re-adjust to civillian life after the military. I spent three years in a homeless program and saved money. I now am purchasing a home and an automobile. I am also paying child support. Some are chronically addicted to living on the street. They are most comfortable to be on their own. Some are just down on their luck. Some are there because of addictions to drugs or alcohol. Whatever the reason, wouldnt I like someone to help me?

i agree. i think we should spend more time giving the homeless who really want help options to get jobs. mcdonalds will hire - and yes, a person would need clean clothes, etc, but many places help with that. the majority of beggers I have seen are either not really poor (yes, there are those all over new york), or do not wish to try to make their lives better (granted for some they might have been on the streets for years).

I use to give cash, but then I decided to stop by the deli, and get them a good sandwich and a beverage.and on occasion when they had a dog with themsome dog food ! I am aware that each homeless person faces different challenges, some substance abuse, some mental illness and a large majority , unemployed for various reasons. Basically , I agree with the comment you've posted. But I do also, believe as a nation...city to city we need to have more shelters in place. More community outreach through our police services and a lot more counseling available to those who find themselves, for whatever reason in a homeless state .

I agree totally except for when the person begging has a disablity. Those are the only people I think about giving to.
If I must work for my money, then the begger should also.

I think that Michael is working off the assumption that because someone is standing, talking and has a brain in their head that they have the ability to hold steady work. Many homeless have mental illness, which does not make them capable of keeping work.
I do not give to individuals on the street. I give to shelters and food shelves.

I agree to an extent, but many homeless people suffer from addiction and/or mental illness. These are the outcasts of society who have lost hope and the necessary faith in themselves to do something as seemingly simple as getting a job.
I say, yes, give to the homeless, but don't necessarily give money. Give time, volunteer in a shelter, give food, clothing, or simply one hot meal.

i don't totally agree, when you're homeless people won't hire you because you don't have a home address or home number and that is the misconception of poverty, those people don't chose to be homeless and beg, but they have to. if i have change then i give to the beggers, except if they are smoking or drinking, then i think, someone gave you money and you bought booze and cigs with it, then i guess you ain't that hungry.

Everyone has different situations. If you have no outside family and your house burns down, with your immediate family in it, and you have no place to go after earning an honest living, should the same consideration be shown to you? Think about it...that could happen to anyone.

I only give a couple of dollars if they outright come up to me and beg, or I'll give them food. Other than that, no. I do agree with that quote. They can get a job.
