This is a project that really requires a good handyman because of the electrical components. Before you purchase one, the installer should evaluate the space and the configuration of the drain pipes to determine which model will best fit in the area and allow room for reconnecting the drain.
If you are not skilled in plumbing and electrical work, this is probably a job best left to the professionals. Call a plumber and get a quote, it probably isn't as expensive as you imagine.
Good Luck!

They are easy to install. Most come with the directions. You will require phillips screwdriver, large slip joint pliers, possibly pipe wrench but I can usually get pliers to work. You will also need plumbers putty. You take the drain out of the sink where placing garbage disposal (it unscrews) I always use the plumbers putty between the metal ring and the rubber gasket where the sink drain was. It is great if you have someone that can hold the top ring in form the sink while you screw the holding nut on under the sink and make sure it lines up precisely. Knock out the plug in the garbage disposal for the dishwasher if you have one. That is the one thing many people forget to do. Connect wiring ( I always wrap them in electrical tape after using wire connectors). Did I mention, make sure power is off first! Connect pipes and test for leaks. If you are replacing an existing one, this should be a piece of cake. The only thing that might get a little tricky is making sure the drainage pipes line up well. This isn't hard, follow the directions. You will be fine

Every installation is different. If there is no electrical plug, wired to a switch, then you need an electrician first. The disposal can be installed at anytime. The piping will have to be modified, if not replaced. All the advice you have gotten here is OK, but like JK said, do you feel like working in cramped, musty areas? What do you do when a pipe breaks on you? If your piping is brass and lead, this is something that not very many plumbers have seen in their careers, so do you think you could tackle such a job? Why not call a plumber, and let him come give you a quote? Most will do this for no charge, just ask up front, when you call. If you don't have a plumber, ask your friends for a name that they recommend. The job will be done correctly, the first time.

We got a disposal from Lowe's, and you can install them in sinks that are already there. The trouble we had was with our pipes. Our house is from 1930, and the plumbing was in bad shape, so a part broke when my husb. was tightening a nut. It was a mess. We called a plumber.
From my experience, it depends on how comfortable you are with getting under the sink and working in a dark, cramped area. Have you done a lot of home improvements? Go for it. Not so much? Have a friend who has come help you, and then you could learn for the next project. Or give it a shot and then call the plumber like we did. :) It's all a learning experinece if you ask me.

Remvoe the strainer from the side you want the disposer and put in the top of the disposer, using plumber's putty around the rim before it goes into the sink, then tighten the compression nut underneath. While you have the garbage disposal out on your counter, buy a prewired pigtail for the disposer, and plug it into receptacle under your sink. Then put in the disposer with the lock ring, hand tighten the waste drains, and you are done. Just like they do it on TV, nothing to it.

Hi, an installation of a garbage disposer is a fairly easy thing to do,unless you don't have an electrical outlet under or near your sink. The only thing I had trouble with (I'm a very small person)is putting the unit up into the ring that holds it.I had to get the jack out of my car,and jack it up to the ring. That sounds funny, but it's true.I think you can do it!

hey, you can buy one at a Home depot, Lowes, even menards
to install it, you just have to go under the sink remove the drain, and attach the disposal to that, but the tricky thing is the wiring(electrical) part.... you might definitly want to get a pro for that!!!

I put in about a thousand, give or take one or two. Easy to put in. Get an average one, you don't need all the bells and whistles they'll try and sell you. You don't want a cheapo either. Go to "Home Depot" and get an average priced one, they're reasonable. They're easy to put in.
