There are many variations to this scam. Most likely what will happen is the check will clear. You will send him money. Then later, the check will bounce. Checks can still bounce even after they have "cleared." The bank will tell you that you owe them money for the bounced check. You will complain saying: "But you said it had cleared." The bank will say too bad, when a check "clears" it does not mean it is good. DO NOT SEND MONEY TO THIS PERSON EVEN IF THE CHECK CLEARS.

it IS a scam. It's actually one of THE most common scams out there and has been featured on the News, Dr. Phil, Oprah, etc.
You'll cash it and send him the cash and think everything's good-- until the transaction is reversed from your account and they take the money back from you.
