My son is eight months old. We just introduced a sippy cup to him yesterday. He will drink from a regular cup, but I want him to have some independence to drink by himself as he holds his bottle by himself. He will hold it correctly, and he has put in in his mouth... But he hasn't drank from it yet. I gave him water to start off with. I know it's only been a day. I'm not really concerned. I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions of ways I can get him interested...? (I don't need anyone telling me my son is too young for a sippy cup. If you don't have anything helpful to say don't say anything at all, please.)

I wasn't being a "smart ***" as someone said. I simply did not want people to start yelling at me for giving my son a sippy cup. I have been using these boards long enough to see how people react to silly things like that.

You answered your own question................it has only been a day and you are not really worried.............he will move at his own pace. Give it to him repeatedly every time you offer him a drink and he will accept and drink from it when he is ready...........hold the cup up to his mouth and let some of the liquid drain in and he will catch on that if he wants some, chocolate milk, or whatever he likes, it is in there.
It is about this age that I gave my kids the sippy. I tried to show them their own independence and ability to make things happen on their own................which helps to stop much of the frustration of being a "helpless baby" which makes for the crying tantrams of frustration on their part..

1) There is no such thing as too young for a sippy cup, sheesh people!

2) Monkey see, monky do. You drink, he drinks.

3) I would stick with water, that is all I put in my son's sippy cup. He's happy, I'm happy. Besides what else does he need? He breastfeeds, I guess if you were formula feeding you could put formula in there. And you could put breastmilk in, but mine won't take breastmilk from anywhere except the breast.

4) These are the most awesome sippy cups they do NOT leak and they don't have a valve! It's witch-craft I tell you!

It all depends on the sippy cup......try to get the ones that have sorta a nipple like sipper on it, so that the change wont be too drastic.....my 3 kids wouldn't take a ordinary sippy cup for the world, so if you find the right ones, it should be an easy thing to do. Good luck with that, and by the way, your gorgeous.....glad to see another Wiccan on here today!!

Your son is not too young for a sippy cup. I gave one to my little guy at 6 months. I got him going on it by putting it out with his meals when he was up in his highchair. I put just a little bit of water in it so that it wasn't too heavy. It did take quite a while before he really got the idea. It just seemed like one day it clicked. Try using the smaller kind with handles on both sides and the soft spout by Gerber, those are great.

Don't worry, he's plenty old enough to start using a sippy cup. Just give him time. My daughter did the same thing, and it wasn't until a few months that she actually realized how to work the sippy cup.

Try giving it to him during his nightly feeding with formula (or breastmilk) in it. Give it to him like a bottle. It took her a while but she got the hang of it.

Just give him the sippy cup and give him what he normally drinks in his bottle in it dnt back and forth the bottle and the cup because he will get confused. Give him the cup and put away all bottles

This is what I did. I put something like juice in the cup and let my kids have it with no spill proof (so they could get a taste of it). Then I would put the spill proff back in and not put anything but milk or water in the bottle so they had to drink from the cup to get the good stuff. Once they get a good taste of juice or something like that they will figgure it out.

Good luck...

Too young? Nah, I know 6 month olds who use sippy cups.

Maybe get a NUBY sippy cup to start out with. They are just like a regular sippy cup, except the part you drink out of is more like a regular bottle nipple. As he gets used to the NUBY one, you can later switch to a more traditional sippy cup with a hard spout. Good luck!

Put someting in the cup that tastes really good--maybe apple juice. Help him out the first few times. When he gets a taste of that sweet apple juice, he will use the sippy cup.

A sippy cup is essentianlly a bottle in a different shape. Some models have a pressure device that prevent spillage even while upended. If you are going to introduce it, you should consider completely replacing the bottle. (And pacifiers, too.)
